Brooklyn
Lead.com was founded by artist and EPA Certified Risk
Assessor Luke Gray in October 2004 following the implementation of The
New York City Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act (Local Law 1).
Luke lives in the historic Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant-Clinton
Hill, and was responding to a need he perceived on the part of many
new homeowners expecting children or with children, who, like himself,
were renovating their own homes.
Luke found that there were many people needing information or confused
about the information that was available, and afraid to call the City
of New York for fear of being inspected and cited for costly violations.
He even found some parents who were afraid to get their child tested
for fear of repercussions from the city.
As an EPA Certified Risk Assessor, Luke is qualified to do full-scale
lead inspections, risk assessments and hazard screens, yet is also qualified
to do more limited and affordable consultations with families that want
to know whether there are any lead hazards in their home or backyard,
and if so, how to manage them in a cost-effective way.
Luke has 20 years of previous experience in his day job doing wall repair
and housepainting, and has renovated his own building, an 1880's firehouse,
in Bed-Stuy. He knows how to deal with and repair lead hazards on different
substrates - plaster, cement, brick, wood, etc. in a way that is lasting
and lead-safe.
He can come into your home, identify hazards through dust, paint, water
and soil samples, and advise you on how to make safe repairs yourself
or direct you to trained workers who can do the job for you.
